The Obama Problem – A Coup in America?

Following months of right-wing hate, fear mongering, and blatant words of racism by Republican Senators, Congressmen, and the leaders of the Republican Party, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, one must wonder what they would think of next.

How about overthrowing the Presidency?

That’s precisely what one loon has suggested in an article for Newsmax, that bastion of right wing respectability based here in Florida.

John L. Perry writes in Newsmax:

There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic. Will the day come when patriotic general and flag officers sit down with the president, or with those who control him, and work out the national equivalent of a “family intervention,” with some form of limited, shared responsibility?

Imagine a bloodless coup to restore and defend the Constitution through an interim administration that would do the serious business of governing and defending the nation. Skilled, military-trained, nation-builders would replace accountability-challenged, radical-left commissars. Having bonded with his twin teleprompters, the president would be detailed for ceremonial speech-making.

Military intervention is what Obama’s exponentially accelerating agenda for “fundamental change” toward a Marxist state is inviting upon America. A coup is not an ideal option, but Obama’s radical ideal is not acceptable or reversible.

Unthinkable? Then think up an alternative, non-violent solution to the Obama problem. Just don’t shrug and say, “We can always worry about that later.”

In the 2008 election, that was the wistful, self-indulgent, indifferent reliance on abnegation of personal responsibility that has sunk the nation into this morass.

The words above are of a domestic terrorist and a traitor to our nation.

From Webster’s:

Sedition
– 5 dictionary results
se⋅di⋅tion
/sɪˈdɪʃən/ Show Spelled Pronunciation Show IPA–noun
1. incitement of discontent or rebellion against a government.
2. any action, esp. in speech or writing, promoting such discontent or rebellion.
3. Archaic. rebellious disorder.

Is this what our country is coming to? Are we going to allow this hate to continue? We have Republican Congressmen demanding secession, spreading lies and hate about health care reform, and now this?

Where’s the outrage?

To make matters worse, guess what entity is a sponsor of Newsmax?

How about the Republican Party?

I have to quote my friend Steve Benen here:

There is an unmistakable trend in right-wing rhetoric in the direction of extremism and violence. It’s not at all healthy, and it’s a sign of conservative contingents gone stark raving mad.

V Taking a Winter Break?

Back in August it was announced that the producers of V shut down production for three weeks in order to “beef up future scripts and bring them in line with the quality of the pilot”.

abc-vAt that time I surmised this could be an excuse to ship Elizabeth Mitchell to Hawaii for a few days to shoot LOST. Now, however, ABC has announced that it will no longer be showing six episodes of the series this fall, instead they will put V on hiatus following the first four episodes and continue the run after the Winter Olympics.

From the LA Times:

The decision is said to be based on ABC’s efforts to promote the series as an “event.” But less optimistic minds might recall that the network had previously shut down production on “V” for two weeks in order to undergo some creative overhaul. That hiatus has now been extended for an additional four weeks.

An ABC spokeswoman insisted that it was always ABC’s intention to broadcast “V,” which has a 13-episode order, in “pod form,” though this decision comes as a bit of a surprise, given the positive buzz surrounding the series, a reimagining of the classic 1980s cult sci-fi series.

As the article points out, it’s never a good idea to split up a series developed in serial form with huge breaks between episodes. Certainly the guys and gals at ABC remember the disaster that was the Writer’s Strike of 1997? Too many great shows fell victim to the strike and the wandering minds of viewers (hello, Pushing Daisies?).

If, in fact, ABC intends to broadcast V as an “event”, wouldn’t it have been easier to just develop it as a limited series or (dare I say it?) a mini-series?

Happy Birthday LOST!

I cannot believe what a waste my life was just a few short years ago. Then, on September 22, 2004, my life became complete when ABC premiered LOST on this date.

Over the years we’ve met an incredibly complex group of characters who’ve faced everything from the mundane aspects of life on an (supposedly) uninhabitated island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to the far more complicated aspects of surviving on such an island.

jackWe’ve met Jack, the pragmatic and scientific physician whose lack of faith forced him to be an unwilling de facto leader of the survivors.

We’ve met Juliet, the  compassionate and caring physician whose faith was tested time and again by the island forcing her to rethink her lockepurpose.

We’ve met John, the dreamer whose faith would ultimately make him the leader of the island.VCAMDXP1VCASR94ZBCA3GL6EHCA62YKFACA6Y3N3OCAT222R1CAXL5H7KCAZX0YK8CA6I84NJCA25YLTLCAIVRQ2KCAXVRRZBCANDS4X6CAI3BAF5CAYJ02JVCAM1BKPYCAW9KY7FCA3IQE0BCAKZ7J8X

We’ve met Kate and Sawyer, two troubled souls on a mission towards redemption for their past sins.

ccWe’ve met Charlie and Claire, two more troubled souls whose mission towards redemption, once completed, went down a tragic path.UCAO81D96CA7FIA2WCAN0XRNYCATIM30ACAUC3656CAFPQ3MUCAXYBBEJCA9R8AQ0CA24J2VUCAH9E5MBCAA3JZ9YCA8FJHFZCAKM5CXACAVHRDNWCACKLVWPCANZAFD8CAADQ471CAG7B2S3CAK6SFY0

We’ve met Jin and Sun, for whom the island provided a new start and rTCAYHPGJNCAIM4OMZCAZQL60RCALUCF1PCAC3S9CNCA2DJ9U0CAZK8PN2CAXYC9QNCAA5AXGBCAWOSN0XCA5JUEYKCAG0K0IHCAMTQD67CAJZ7LL5CAQBLK0KCATVY3OHCABQP345CA39OSERCAVZXI66enewed love.

We’ve met Sayid, perhaps the only survivor of the plane crash who’s path towards redemption has taken a terribly wrong turn.

We’ve met Michael, driven to insanity by the demands of fatherhood and the islanwalt michaeld, meeting his fate as the only means of redemption.

rosebernardWe’ve met Bernard and Rose, whose love for each other surpasses and negates their physical reality.

And we’ve met Hurley. Besieged by what he thinks is a string ofhurley bad luck provided by those infamous six numbers, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42, Hurley consistently became the voice of reason, humor and honesty among the survivors.

ben and othersWe’ve met The Others, led by Ben Linus, perhaps the most convoluted and troubled character in television history. A man who began to believe his own lies in order to serve the island. All the while realizing and mourning his own mortality.

dharmaWe’ve met The Dharma Initiative, a utopian society of scientists on a mission we’ve yet to fully understand.

Above all, we’ve met The Island. By far the most important character in LOST. Through the various guises of The Island we’ve seen the growth of faith, the promise of eternal life, the accountability for one’s actions, and above all, the realization that all is not what we see.

Happy Birthday, LOST!

Patriotic Unity or Racist Hate? – Another Look

Following my recent post about Glenn Beck’s 9/12 March in Washington comes this revelation: Marching alongside the lily white protesters at the Capital was a fringe group so vile in their message one must be amazed at the positive reception they received from their fellow visitors…

Here’s Rachel Maddow:

lol…I’m shocked, amused, and not at all surprised! One of the commenters to my previous post, someone who identified himself as “Ohandy1” took me to issue for calling the protesters in Washington “idiots”. I stand corrected. No idiot would ever fall for, least of all march along arm-in-arm with,  the Billionaires for Wealthcare.  Only stupid idiots would!

Mr. Ohandy1 also took me to task over the number of people attending the event. Citing the ever-reliable Michele Malkin as his source, he insisted two million (stupid idiots) attended the march this past weekend! He even alluded to an even greater number of three million were marching…quote:

The estimates, not misquoted, place the numbers up to 2mil. (I’ve heard numbers over 3 but not many trying to stand by that) Near as I can tell this could make this the LARGEST event EVER of its kind. Even larger than the inoguration. Even the lower estimates make it a notable event larger than the “million man march” which reached about 800,000 according to the most generous estimates.

Yeah, right.  Here’s a picture of President Obama’s inauguration:

And…here’s a picture (from Fox News) of the 9/12 Stupid Idiot March from last weekend…

Patriotic Unity or Racist Hate?

Yesterday, a group of approximately 60,000* men and women descended upon Washington, D.C., in a protest organized by FreedomWorks, Fox News, andslide_2672_37530_large cheerleaded by the heir-apparent of the Republican Party, Glenn Beck. The march, presumptively to protest President Obama’s health care proposals and government spending, was the brainchild (yes, I know that’s an oxymoron) of Beck who envisioned his 9/12 Project earlier this year in his quest to spread his hatred and racist propoganda directly at the President:

Beck hosted a special program earlier this year announcing his initiative called the “9/12 Project” — an effort to ostensibly recreate the patriotic unity after the September 11 attacks.

Let’s talk about the above quote. Patriotic unity? Really? I remember the hours, days, and weeks following the attacks on the World Trade Center that killed nearly 3,000 people.

slide_2672_37531_largeI remember a distinctly non-partisan air of approval in the nation’s reaction to President Bush’s handing of this terrorist act in it’s aftermatch.

I remember nearly every single American, White, Black, Hispanic, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Agnostic, Straight, Gay, Young and Old displaying patriotic flags, bumper stickers and words in support of then President Bush’s upcoming War on Terrorism.

That was patriotic unity!

What we saw yesterday in the nation’s Capital, lined along the streets, was far from patriotic unity.

What we saw yesterday was a sea of white faces. What we saw yesterday was the fringe of the conservative right pronouncing, nee repeating the words of racist hate so often spewed out by Glenn Beck and his co-conspirators at Fox News and elsewhere.

What we saw yesterday was hate, racism, and bigotry lining the streets of Washington, D.C.

What we saw yesterday was nowhere near the patriotic unity we saw in thesigncomp1 days and weeks following the 9-11 attacks. Not when that unity doesn’t include the Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, Muslims, Agnostics, Gays, Young and Old marching alongside the white evangelical Christians.

Until that day happens and not until that day happens can we say the words patriotic unity again.

* In an apparent attempt to pad the numbers, several conservative groups and Fox News decided to mis-quote ABC News and put the number of attendees at an astonishing 1.5 million people. Of course it was just another lie in a throng of lies.
