Occupy Our Town!

I recently learned that the forum I participated on for a very short time (a little less than two years) has bit the proverbial dust. That would be Muchedumbre.  At times I enjoyed sparring with the guys and gals there, other times not so much. For all the drama the Muche caused me, self-inflicted or not, I feel a sadness in it’s disappearance from the interwebs.

Friendships, or other relationships, bring a certain affinity for those who visited, and a few (if not many) true friends.  Social websites, such as Facebook, will never duplicate the closeness of family – good and bad – that the muche did. Facebook, with the identity of a corporate money-maker, doesn’t allow it’s participants the freedom to express themselves without sanction. People are wary of sharing their true feelings (and current photo) on a webpage that can be seen by everyone in the world. Recent changes to Facebook underscore this fact even more succinctly.

In this world of 140 characters and less, we find ourselves living a fast food existence. Internet forums, by nature of design, don’t work that way and are a slowly dying breed. 140 characters or less doesn’t allow for intelligent discourse, and for that matter, unintelligent discourse. Both of which were prevalent on the former Muche. Prone to pages and pages of wordy arguments in the political section, the Muche was equally well-known for up-to-the-minute news from the worlds of entertainment and religion. As well as off-the-wall humor that couldn’t be found anywhere else. And isn’t that what family is all about?

We were an eclectic group of friends who were originally brought together as fans of The Monsters in the Morning on Real Radio 104.1 in Orlando (as well as The Philips Phile, SBK Live, and other radio programs) and morphed through the years to a group who found more to discuss than a radio show; sharing similar interests, pop culture in general, television (including Survivor), movies, food (everyone loves to eat!) an amazing collection of music videos, and politics. We still wish to discuss the Monsters and the Phile and addition, we’ve become the new home of the world famous Just C’s Football Picks!  As an extra bonus, our forum originally was created to discuss ABC’s LOST and is therefore a virtual treasure trove of discussion, speculation and love for the Island and it’s residents.

In the past week or so, I’ve updated my forum, and taken it in a new direction to accomodate and welcome former participants from the Muche.

Jerry Buell Is A Bad Teacher!

There’s this story in the local press regarding a teacher in Mt. Dora, Florida, Jerry Buell, who was suspended for posting what one could consider hatred towards gays on his personal Facebook page.

‘A Florida high school’s “Teacher of the Year” has been suspended for an anti-gay post he wrote on his Facebook page last month.

Jerry Buell, a history teacher at Mount Dora High School in Mount Dora, Fla. wrote on his Facebook page that he “almost threw up” when he was having dinner and news came on of New York’s decision to allow same-sex marriage showed up July 25.

“If they want to call it a union, go ahead,” Buell wrote, according to ClickOrlando.com. “But don’t insult a man and woman’s marriage by throwing it in the same cesspool as same-sex whatever! God will not be mocked. When did this sin become acceptable???”

Left out of the above, but included in a story on FOX Radio, was this statement from Buell:

“And now they showed two guys kissing after their announcement.”

See…here’s the deal, Mr. Buell. You, Sir, are a teacher. Teachers are role models for students, who often look up to them for advice when troubled. Your job is to guide the student in the quest to make his or her own logical decision regarding a topic, not to give them your personal opinion.

You are there to instruct the student, not pontificate. That includes posting on a Facebook page that you made public by choice. Do you have students as friends on your Facebook page? Do your students view your Facebook page? Of course they do.

Therefore, you have failed in your responsibilities as a teacher.

I’m not going to delve into your supposed First Amendment rights. Your obligation to your students trumps any rights of personal expression you may feel you have in the public atmosphere.

Teacher of the Year? You don’t deserve that honor, Sir.

NOTE: Discussion of this topic can be found on my forum. You’re welcome to join in!

Bored?

Since the departure of our beloved LOST, my little forum has gone by the wayside. In the past week or so, however, I’ve updated it and taken it in a new direction…After a recent insurrection of the people (no, not Egypt!), we’ll be having an influx of new visitors and I’d like my friends who enjoy this blog to join us.

Welcome to Our Town!

We’re an eclectic group of friends connected through the years with similar interests, including LOST, but also pop culture in general, television (including Survivor), movies, food (everyone loves to eat!) an amazing collection of music videos, and politics. (Don’t let the politics scare ya!)

Our state of the art host and server also allow posters to cross-post new topics on Facebook and Twitter.

Oh. And we still talk about LOST!

Bristol’s Pistols: Cheating Scandal?

OK. I wasn’t planning to post anything about the most recent scandal regarding the out-of-control white trash Palin children. You know, the one where Willow gets all high and mighty on Facebook, spewing profanities and homophobic remarks towards a non-fan of her mother’s docu-comedy Sarah Palin’s Alaska (of course, older sister and role model Bristol had to chime in too! The kids were spitting out words, to use an old cliche’, that would make a sailor blush!

I’ve noted recently on this blog and elsewhere the misadventures of the Wasilla Hillbillies, whether it be the female patriarch of the gang of underage, unwed, dropout, drunken, and drugged-out ne’er do wells, Sarah Palin; her flat-footed dancing sensation single Mom and erstwhile abstinenance advocate unwed mom Bristol, or the 16 year old booze-swilling, home trashing Willow and her escapades with The Colony Girls.

I’ve also noted Bristol’s meteoric rise to infamy on Dancing With the Stars (a. She can’t dance b. She’s not a star. She’s the daughter of a half-term, half-witted, half of a failed political team.)

Even with the success of my Twitter campaign (#boycottDWTS), Bristol just keeps getting the votes to cruise through to the finale of Dancing With the Stars with little or no regard for talent.  Side note: Why don’t they just drop the pretense and call it Dancing With the Non-Stars next season? If the show’s still around…)

Today, we find the reason for Bristol’s success on Dancing With the Stars.

Seems like a conservative Tea Party web site, HillBuzz, and Private Messages sent through both Bristol’s official (and unofficial) Facebook page, exploited a glitch in the email voting mechanism at ABC; allowing for unlimited voting for their darling Bristol.

But what isn’t widely known is the evidence—via message board comments on some conservative sites—that this mobilization involves fixing this (albeit meaningless) election through a technical snafu on ABC’s website, which allows Palin’s supporters to cast an infinite number of email votes:

Here’s some of the comments from the cheaters:

Here’s a hint: They don’t have to be VALID email addresses to register them with ABC.com, there is apparently no validation process. The just have to be formatted like a valid email address, and you must use a valid zip code and a birthdate that makes you old enough to vote. I’m voting like a democrat, all night long…

No, it doesn’t have to be a valid email address – I had one of my anonymous ones XXX@yahoo.com that I used, and then just did the sign-up process all over again with XXX1@yahoo.com and it worked.

Got my 80 votes in online…took 2 hours. I am beat

I only got 42 in, I have some catching up to do!

HillBuzz, Tuesday night had this to say:

“Thank you all for helping Bristol Palin. . . . Just look at Jennifer Grey’s face. . . . Says it all. Our Bristol is in the finale. The woman impersonating Jennifer Grey looked [ticked]. [Brandy] is eliminated and hopefully not allowed to drive herself home. How do we win this for Bristol?”

ABC, in light of this revealation, may change  their voting procedures. How will this bode? We won’t know until next week.

Iran Update

Breaking…rioters are clashing with government troops in the area surrounding Tehran University. Numbers estimated at 3000+.

From MSNBC:

Eyewitnesses described fierce clashes near Revolution Square in central Tehran after some 3,000 protesters chanted “Death to the dictator!” and “Death to dictatorship!”

Video of today’s uprising which, as I predicted, has grown to be much more than just support for Mousavi…it’s much bigger than that…it’s the birth of a new country at the hands of it’s people.

Note: Video is graphic. It shows a young woman being shot by the police in the streets of Tehran:

Here’s some home video on Facebook from Iran from a student:

Finally, from @Mousavi1388 on Twitter:
